Windsor Hotel - Enjoy Hadrian's Wall

Evidence from Sewingshields suggests that surveyors first laid out a single line of stones to indicate where the wall should be built. Then the turrets and milecastles were started. It is though that work started at Newcastle and progressed westwards but this is open to debate. Inscriptions called centurial stones have been found at regular intervals suggesting that each century was allocated a length of wall to build. The wall was not built exactly the same way for its whole length – local conditions and new ideas had an effect. The core between the front and back stone facings could be of clay, soil and/or stones.

Directions:

A1 from the North Leave A1 at exit marked A19 Tyne Tunnel and Tynemouth. On A19 at Silverlink roundabout take exit marked A1058 and Tynemouth. Continue on A1058 until you reach the coast. Turn left at the roundabout on the seafront and follow this road for approx 1.5 miles. You will see the Rex Hotel on the left turn left here and the Windsor is half way up South Parade on your left.A1 from the South On A1 continue past Washington Services at junction 64 and merge onto the A194M. Take second exit at the roundabout and join onto the A194. From A194 join onto the A19 north. Follow signposts marked Tyne Tunnel this is a toll tunnel and the approx cost is 1.00 per car. On leaving the tunnel at the roundabout take the exit marked A19 Tynemouth. You will approach the Silverlink Roundabout follow instructions as above from here.
