Housesteads and Vindolanda are the most popular visitor’s sites along Hadrian’s Wall. Below is a list of the recommended sites to visit. Housesteads Housesteads Roman Fort is the most complete Roman fort in Britain, Housesteads boasts spectacular views. Located halfway along Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland, there are magnificent ruins to explore – including granaries, barracks, a hospital and even a multi-seated latrine. There is also a museum, which shows how Housesteads once looked. www.english-heritage.org.uk Vindolanda Hidden away about a mile south of the wall, this was an important military base some 40 years before Hadrian came to Britain. www.vindolanda.com) . Birdoswald Birdoswald stands high above a meander in the River Irthing, in one of the most picturesque settings on Hadrian's Wall. A Roman fort, turret and milecastle can all be seen on this excellent stretch of the Wall. www.english-heritage.org.uk Roman Army Museum The Roman Army Museum is a former farm, right by one of the most spectacular stretches of the wall. This museum is run by the Vindolanda Trust. www.vindolanda.com Chesters Visit Chesters Roman Fort and discover the best visible remains of a cavalry fort in Britain. The fort was built to guard the Roman Bridge which carried Hadrian’s Wall over the River North Tyne in Northumberland. www.english-heritage.org.uk Corbridge The extensively excavated remains include a fountain house with an aqueduct, a pair of granaries, and walled military compounds containing barracks, temples, houses and a headquarters building with a belowground strongroom. You can even walk on the original Stanegate Roman road, which predated Hadrian's Wall and passes through the centre of the site. www.english-heritage.org.uk Segedunum Segedunum in Wallsend is the gateway to Hadrian's Wall. It is the most excavated Fort along the Wall and has a large interactive museum plus a 35 metre high viewing tower providing outstanding views across this World Heritage Site.
